![]() Oster Nail Grinder 078129-101 By: Oster Average Rating: 4.0 Total Reviews: 46 More Information Want to like it but still not sure I suppose if it spun any faster or if the grit was any more coarse I would burn thru my doxies toenails too fast, but using this will take a little longer than expected to get proficient. The long hair between her toes is tough to deal with, so am considering clipping it back before getting her way-long nails back under control. I wont return it, but it will take some practice before Im pleased with the purchase. Not sure about how to change heads, or what they do: the directions are far too simplistic and not very instructional. But, it aint rocket science, either. 3 trims at the fluff npup will pay for this tool, so I would recommend it. DOES beat the heck out of worrying that a nail clipper will go too close to the quick. Great nail clipper for my mutts This is a wonderful product for those that have anxiety about using the traditional nail clippers like I do. After cutting my dogs nail much too short, I decided to try this out in order to save me the heartache of watching my dog limp around due to my inability to properly clip. It is such a life saver. The noise is a bit loud, so it takes both my husband and I to do this task. One holds her while the other one uses the grinder as she gets scared by it. We usually bribe her with treats though in order to get the job done. :) Please be aware though that the process itself is not fun as there is an unpleasant odor that comes with grinding the nail down. Also? I would not wear anything that picks up dust easily (like a dark-colored sweater) due to the shavings flying everywhere during the process. Id even think about picking up some goggles if you dont wear glasses because it can get in your eye during the process. Overall though, I really like this process as it gives me a little peace of mind that Im not going to hurt either of my dogs when trimming their nails this way. Handy tool for pets! The Oster Nail Grinder is a handy and easy to use nail trimmer for your dog. Be sure to introduce your pet to the grinder carefully so they are not frightened of it. Long nails will most likely need to be trimmed with hand clipper before using the Oster Grinder first time. Love it, love it, love it.... Product works as stated and does a great job on my dogs nails. Much, much easier than clipping her nails. I would definitely recommend this product. Great for the money My dog is scared stiff of it, but he has always hated anything or anyone touching his nails. For us it is a two person job, but the grider does the trick. Good tool, however you must work with your dog to get him/her use to the noise and feel. The tool does exactly as it says. But you must work with your dog alot to get them use to the noise and feel of the grinder. I massaged my dogs feet everyday for a week before the oster arrrived. This helped for my dog to get use to my touch and the practice that I wasnt going to hurt him. Then once the oster arrived I massaged his feet with the oster OFF. Then for the following week I massaged his feet with the oster turned on at different levels, but I didnt groom his nails. Then finally about 2 weeks ago I was able to grind his nails with ease. Again, this is a great tool for grinding nails, however you have to work with your dog and have a great deal of patience. Better than expected, but not perfect. We have two chihuahuas who are big babies when it comes to having their nails clipped. I have used the Oster grinder a few times now. They dont get nearly so hysterical now. I would say the "drama" factor has decreased from a 9 to a 3. I have had two minor problems with the grinder. One, attaching the head is a little tricky. It takes me two or three tries before I get it locked in correctly. Second, the sand paper ring tends to slip. Keep an eye on it. Works well on large dogs I did research on Amazon to try and find the right nail cutter. My dog hates the clipper and it was getting harder and harder to get her to sit still - then I clipped a too far and that was it. This is quiet and does a good job on strong thick nils. question Sounds like a useful product but why is it considered a kitchen and dining product? Ok Product - My Dog Hates It!!! Its an ok product. When you apply a little more pressure it doesnt work. My dog is so afraid of this grinder, we never used it for the 2nd time. Its very noisy and gives off a vibration that scares my dog so much that he has to run and hide for hours. Not what Ive expected to do. Great product! This works great on my dogs nails. I have 2 small dogs and a medium sized dog, and it works well on all of their nails. It has adjustable settings, and I love that you plug it into a wall outlet so you dont spend a small fortune on batteries. Whatever you do- don't drop it or set it down hard I used to love this company and product. I have show dogs and depend on short perfect nails and use grinders. My first Oster was awesome, and interchangeable with Dremel replacement sanding bands. Then I bought the newer (blue) one at Petsmart. While doing the nails I turned off the tool and set it down hastily, it never worked again. Totally would not turn on. I tried to repair it but everything is so small I couldnt figure out what the problem was. So the next day I bought another out of the store- same kind. While I was doing nails on the grooming table the puppy ran by and snagged the cord and pulled it off the table onto the carpet. It only fell 2.5 feet onto soft carpet but it never worked again either. Same exact situation. These need to be tougher because they are so light and the cord is so long, things happen and they need to be able to withstand a short drop. I would recommend this for the cautious pet owner only. People that groom often or groom on a table should really beware. I wont buy this product again. WOW! IT MAY BE EXPENSIVE BUT IT WORKS!!! This works great. I just recently bought the pedi paws and that was lousy. Did nothing for my big dogs. That was a waste of $20.00. So, I spent 3 times the price of the pedi paws and now I have something that works. One of my dogs wont let me cut her nails, she pulls just when Im about to cut. Id spend 30 minutes wrestling with her until she won and I gave up. Shes now sliding around on my kitchen floor because her nails are so long. I was desperate. If I had the time I would of purchased this from Amazon but I was in a hurry and ended up spending $20.00 more then I could of gotten it on Amazon. I bought it at Petsmart. I should of done this years ago. Im amazed at how well this works. Both my dogs are handling the noise quite well. Its not as noisy as I thought it might be. Im a happy camper!! Oh yeah, so are my dogs! Oster Pet Nail Grinder I chose this product over the cheaper "Pedi-Paws" as I wanted something that could handle the substantial nails on my shepherd-rottie mix. This looked like it would do the trick and it does. While I wouldnt go so far as to say my dog enjoys these sessions, she does tolerate them. I have been doing short, but frequent sessions to get her accustomed to it. In any event, it is much better than hacking off the nail, and possibly the quick as well!! Great product! The Oster Nail Grinder worked great once you learned how to use it. The directions were poorly written. Happy I bought it! Im so happy I bought this! It makes my standard poodles nails short, smooth and rounded without the potential pain or bleeding caused by nail clippers. I havent used it on my parrots yet but plan to soon. The instructions arent great but its not hard to figure out. The assembly of the bits is like an electric screwdriver. You press the lock button lightly to hold the metal tube (where the bits go in) in place while you screw or unscrew the the thing that holds the bits in place. You use the rougher bands for quick, heavy duty grinding, the finer bands for lighter duty (small breed dogs or cats, birds, etc.) and the grinding stone as a finishing tool to finely smooth the nail. To change the bands, you just have to gently work the band off of the grinding drum and replace with the one you want. Be careful not to stretch the bands or they wont stay securely on the drum. Theres a dial to select the speed you want. Start at the very slowest it can go. Even though it wont really grind anything down, itll get your animal used to the tool. The next day, go a little higher. Work in baby steps until you and your animal is comfortable with the nail grinder. me Really like this product for taking the nails off my dogs. I had gotten to the point of not wanting to attempt trimming his nail with the clippers for fear of cutting the quick (did a couple of time). Now other than it tickling may dogs toes I can get it done effortlessly without pain and the blood from cutting to close. My dogs and I are all happy. wouldn't recommend Its difficult to "start from the bottom" and work your way up (as the directions say to) without touching the dogs pads at all with the nail grinder. Also, its nearly impossible to get the right angle to file the dewclaw. As stated previously, it takes a lot of patience. If you and your dog have got the time, I suppose you may have better luck than me. Id rather pay $10 for the vet to trim my dogs nails than to hassle with this nail grinder again. pretty nails The retailer my order came from was very punctual & highly recommend them. The Oster dog nail grinder I dont know yet so far my dog is afraid of it & she hurt her paw chasing a squirrel so havent forced her yet but I do like it & hope to use it often. Oster Nail Grinder! The Oster Nail Grinder is my saving grace! I used to hate to clip my dogs nails because I was afraid that I would hit the quick and make him bleed. Now I can stop grinding as soon as I start to see the quick! Also, my dog used to scratch me with his sharp nails after I used clippers; now, with the Grinder, they are so smooth! Cons: They do not have directions on how to use the Grinder. I had to look up directions on the internet from some random lady who made a website detailing how she used her grinder. It was frustrating at first because I had no clue what pieces to use first or at what speed. Also, the noise is NOT as quiet as a whisper. Im not sure if its just mine, but I found mine to be quite loud. Overall, the pros of having and using the Nail Grinder outweigh the cons. I would definitely recommend the Grinder to anyone with dogs! Keeping their nails short and smooth is easy as pie! Suggestions: If you have a large dog, wearing some sort of mask over your nose and mouth would help a lot! I have a Great Dane and his nails produce quite a lot of powder when I grind them. Also, introduce the product slowly to your dog. Its frustrating if they are afraid of the noise/feeling of the Grinder and want to get away from it. Use lots of treats! :) Excellent investment I have used the nail grinder 3 or 4 times now on my Boston Terrier and it works great. It is light weight and grinds his nails down in much less time than it would take to cut them. He is not as scared of it as he was of the nail clippers. I love it. I like the fact that it just plugs in too so that I dont have to worry about batteries or the power ever dying down. Great product! Not Enough Information The nail grinder seems to be everything advertised, but like so many other buyers, it would sure be nice if Oster provided more information. Virtually nothing is provided, so thank goodness there are others who have used the Internet to describe their experiences with the grinder, and their recommendations. slightly under powered This works but is a bit under powered making the process take longer that the dog or I would like. Poor Results at High Speeds This product works well at low speeds but when you use it on high speed and try to grind a dogs nails, it slows down considerably. Motor needs more torque! I returned this product and purchased a Dremel variable speed 35000RPM model that works great! Amazon is GREAT about processing returns and ensuring the customer is satisfied! love this item! I own five dogs and one that had nails from puppymill world.... This tool is great and worked on her nails! She hated the clipper and had issues with her feet. After working on them every week she has more normal nails. She does not mind the sound after being introduced to it first. Love the product and all my dogs but one pom who pull have no problem with me using the grinder on their feet. The one that has issues allows me to work on her feet if my husband rubs her belly. Great tool and worth the money! Nail Grinders in general- HOW TO article to make it easy on the dog Check out this article telling how to make the experience pleasant for you and your pet. http://www.neholistic.com/articles/0098.htm Works as designed Used it on my dogs tough nails for the first time. It worked fine, I love the variable speeds. So far I love this!!! I have two beagles. 1 let me clip his nails and he was always an angel. The other put up a subtle, but persistant fight from day 1. She squirmed and wiggled and showed distress, but never bit or cried. All of that and I never once clipped a nail to show blood. I saw this product and decided I had to do something to ease my female beagles stress. So far so good!!!! It takes some work to get them used to it. It is a power tool. But it has an adjustable speed which afects the sound level as well. I started them both out at the lowest and just touched the tool to their bodies and then their feet to feel the vibration. It didt take any time to get the male to let me work all four paws. The female has been slower going because I dont want to push her or stress her, but she is already better than she was with toe nail clippers. She sits still and lets me do both of her back paws. I started out doing a little work(about 5 mins) each of my days off (3)and they are getting very desensitized to it. I also always give them treats after. They are now excited when they see me sit down with the drill. The instructions for the drill were not extensinsive for "dog training", but neither were they overly limited. I thought they gave the bare minimum to get started. Everyone should try this if their dogs dont like clippers. Just realize it is definitly a regular maintanence. The drill isnt made to drill monster nails down in a snap. If they are really long, do it in a few days. And never hold a drill on a nail too long as it will heat it up their nail. Move from nail to nail and then back again. Enjoy!!!! I do so far. Perfect solution! I have a German Shepherd who hates to have his nails cut. In fact he does not even like me touching his feet. I kept buying various nail clippers. Nothing worked. He would jerk his leg a split second before I was going to clip the nail. I had to start taking him to the vet to have his nails clipped which was starting to get expensive. It took two techs to hold him down and cut the nails. Each nail was a different length and the ends were very ragged which scratched my wood floors. To be honest he was not thrilled about me using the grinder on his nails - but he let me trim all of his nails. I had no fear about hurting him and I think he picked up on my new self confidence. I was able to keep going until each nail was the same length and the ends were nice and rounded. I wish I had purchased this product before I bought 6 different types of clippers over the years. Oster Nail Grinder 078129-101 Still getting my boy used to it. Love that there no more sharp claws or cutting the quik anymore. Just adopted a new dog from the Animal Shelter. Will have to use on him after he gets settled in. Highly recommend it. Good product I received the nail grinder in a timely manor and was more than plesed with the price. The stores in my area were 20.00 higher. The grinder works fine and makes the nail trimming for my 2 dogs a lot easier. Love it! One of my dogs has very brittle nails. When I would use regular nail clippers it would just cause his nails to splinter and in the end they would be sharper then if I hadnt trimmed them in the first place. He was killing my brand new furniture so much that I had to put down blankets to keep him from doing more damage. Since I purchased this product and used it his nails have been great. No more chipping the grinder files them down and its quick.. He still doesnt like people doing his nails but I like that hes not killing my new sofa any longer.. Worth the Money My dad suggested that I look at a nail grinder because my Dachshund always cried a little when I would cut her nails even though I never cut the quick of the nail. He said that even though the quick wasnt cut it still contracted causing discomfort. I bought this product and have used it several times and my dog is much more comfortable when I use this tool instead of nail clippers. We LOVE it! If only they told you how to use it! I just received this Oster pet nail grinder and I think it will probably work fine if I can just figure out how to use it. I agree with previous reviews that say the directions are poorly written. They dont even tell you which of the drums to use first...grinding stone or sandpaper wheel. And you have to keep trying different twists and turns to get one of them locked into place. I called their customer service number (no email available) and their response was this: "Maam, we are not groomers. You would have to ask a professional dog groomer how to use the grinder." So, hopefully my dogs wont freak out with all my experimenting before I get it figured out. Love my Pet Nail Grinder Kit Works very good on my doggie, just a little 8 pounder who is very well behaved and will sit while i work on his nails. Tried it on my brothers 85 pound doggie who didnt like it so much, unable to use the item on his doggie! I think this product works well but only if the dog is receptive to it...if you cant get your dog used to the noise and the dust....it doesnt matter how good the product. Takes a little practice I bought this for my 2 dogs an Australian Shepherd and a Chihuahua. I got tired of taking my dogs to get their nails clipped at the groomers and paying a fortune and having them tell me that they accidentally cut the quick. At first both of them were afraid of the machine because of the noise it made. They ran away and it was difficult to keep them in one spot so I could work on their nails. It was difficult to chase after them with the cord and having to find an outlet. I did enjoy that with the cord I didnt have to bother charging and recharging the machine. After a while, I was able to groom their nails and they got used to the sound. I thought it was better than the traditional clippers and there were no jagged edges like clippers and I didnt have to worry about cutting into the quick. I would recommend this product as long as you have the patience to use it and let your pets get used to it. Good for maintenance, lacks a little power Well built piece of equipment. Comes in a nice case. The grinder itself is a decent one but it seems to lack a little power needed to handle my large dogs long think nails. I bought it to cut back his nails without all the trauma but it didnt seem to work out that way. It took forever to do just 2 nails and I was afraid I was going to burn the motor out so I ended up having to have the vet clip his nails like always and then use the grinder to maintain them smooth and short. Would probably be better for medium to small dogs with nails instead of "claws". seems to work well. We were very nervous cutting our dogs nails after cutting one too short and getting bleeding. Many of his nails are black, and impossible to find the quick. We have only used the grinder one time, but it seems to work well. Will use this weekly until we get the nails where they need to be. Then mainly for maintenance. Dog (and us) were nervous at first, but im sure it will get better with experience. Tool works well, even with larger dogs, 65 lbs. seems to work well. Im not as afraid to use it vs. a guillotine clipper because I know that I will not cut it to close to the quick and have it bleed, but my puppy is still terrified of it, probably because of the noise. I try not to hold it on his nail to long to keep it from heating up. One thing that is a little awkward is that there is a button to lock the shaft from turning to allow you to change the bits and it is in an inconvenient location next to where my fingers are holding the grinder. It takes a bit of practice to not push down on the button while Im using it, not a good thing when that happens. Good Grinder Overall I like the grinder. Maybe skip it The diagram of the grinder did not show some of the parts, so I had to fool around with it to figure out how to lock the grinding stone in corectly. It does a good job grinding, but of course my dogs are sort of freaked out by it. They do not mind getting their nails done with a clipper, so I think I will clip them the regular way, and maybe just do a quick grind of the ends. If your dog hates to have his nails cut, this will probably make them panic. I can trim all nails in about 20 minutes at home and without having to worry about batteries. nail grinder excellent alternative for nail cutters What a great piece of equipment. Our dog has long nails and hates having his nails cut. His nails are dark and it is difficult to see the quick. In the past when we have clipped his nails, the quick often was cut causing pain and bleeding. It was always a struggle to clip his nails. Now he just lays there and lets us file his nails. We do a little at a time and the quick is beginning to receed. Would definitely recommend! ok They need to have better instructions for using this product. Slightly noisy, the speed does not stay consistant. ok They need to have better instructions for using this product. Slightly noisy, the speed does not stay consistant. Excellent with great customer service The Item works great on my finiky Sherpei and when I had problems with my original order they were excellent with returns and had great customer service. I have never had a smoother online return. Thank You!!! Excellent with great customer service The Item works great on my finiky Sherpei and when I had problems with my original order they were excellent with returns and had great customer service. I have never had a smoother online return. Thank You!!! Perfect nail care I love this kit.... owning great danes for over 11 years nail care has always been a challenge ... the sheer strength it requires to use a nail cliper on their thick nails is an issue and the results are chipped , rough peeling nails. I dreaded the possibility of clipping the quick and hurting them... therefore I never was able to trim as short as I preferred. This tool required patient conditioning ... first to "smell "it ... then to "hear" it ... then to "touch" with it. I started with one paw ... then two, then three and finally all four. Gradually I earned their trust, and now no accidental nicking ... shorter, well-groomed paws with no snags or rough edges. It is quick and efficient and I no longer dread nail trimming... neither do they ! Great danes have beautiful huge elegant paws and when trimmed short and tidy they are gorgeous! They are now also less apt to scratch me during their play ! I recommend this tool kit highly and cannot even imagine going back to the old conventional nail trims. Thankyou from me and my danes !
